Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How long does it take to draw up plans for a new home?

Once we have our initial meeting to discuss your new home plans it takes me about one to two weeks to have a preliminary plan to you for review depending on how busy I am at the time. Once the preliminary plans are approved with any changes that you make it takes me about another week to create the working drawings which are ready to be turned in for permitting.

What is the typical cost of a set of drawn up plans for a new home?

I have a rate sheet of pricing that I can provide if you are interested. I start out @ $.60 / sf for smaller homes and about a $1.00 / sf depending on the size and complexity of the home. Also depending on the complexity of the home engineering may be required which I outsource and would be an additional cost. Other items that you may need are a site plan, Energy code document and wall bracing plans. When we meet to discuss your plans, we can go over the potential costs that you will incur to create your home plans.

Do you have a minimum home size that you will draw plans for?

The main answer is no. I have drawn plans for shops and other out buildings and homes from 900 Sq. ft. to over 7,000 Sq. Ft. I also draw plan for remodels and additions.

About Us

Kent Mortensen
Founder and President
A boy from the small farm town of Quincy, Washington, who through hard work and dedication has become one of the most highly respected builders in the Treasure Valley and beyond. Kent is known for his integrity, industry service, and quality of construction, evidenced by many of his customers who come back to him for subsequent work. Kent gained a college education in architecture and building.

He started Mortensen Construction in 1978 as a framing company. In 1985 he started building homes while continuing to frame homes for other contractors. In 1988 he entered his first home in the Parade of Homes. Lifestyle Homes was started in 1990 when he saw a need for pre-designed homes offering modifications and options to fit the buyers' needs with Mortensen Construction continuing to build semi-custom and custom homes.

He started Lifestyle Home design in 2009. With the down turn in the building industry at that time Kent felt that since he had a back ground in architectural design he could draw his own plans and spent some time getting up to speed with a 3D CAD software program called Chief Architect. He then started drawing plans for himself. When others found out that he was designing homes, other builders and private individuals started hiring him to draw their plans. With his 40 years of extensive experience framing and building homes this allowed him to create home plans that worked without having unforeseen problems crop up. He has retired from the building side of his business and is now concentrating just on his home design business.

Service to the home building industry has been very important to Kent. He served as the President of the Building Contractors Association of South West Idaho (BCASWI). Kent also served on the Board of Directors for the Idaho Building Contractors Association (IBCA) as well as the National Association of Home builders (NAHB). Kent served as the President of the IBCA. Kent is a Life Director for both the BCASWI and the IBCA. Kent has received many recognitions over the years in business. Builder of the Year in 1993 from the BCASWI and Builder of the Year in 2000 from the IBCA. The IBCA recognized Mortensen Construction as Company of the Year in 2001.

Outside of the building industry, Kent has volunteered in the Boy Scouts of America for over 30 years. He received the District Award of Merit in 2002. Kent and Wendy are the parents of five children, four boys and one girl, and now boast 15 grandchildren.
